The Four Elements and Their Interactions

The one energy grammar all 56 minor cards share

Fire, water, air and earth are not decoration — they are the skeleton of the minors: the 56 cards are four energies each walking from 1 to 10, then taking four personal forms. Know the four temperaments and how they interact, and you have learned half the deck at once.

Four energies

Fire · Wands = action, will, desire. Water · Cups = feeling, relationship, intuition. Air · Swords = thought, language, conflict. Earth · Pentacles = matter, body, money. For any minor card, the first question is always: which energy is this?

The temperaments

Fire and air are fast and outward; water and earth slow and inward. Fire burns without asking directions, water spreads without arguing, air turns fast and scatters fast, earth walks slowly but lands every step. Speed and direction decide how the same event gets four different responses.

e.g. The same "beginning": the Ace of Wands charges, the Ace of Cups feels first, the Ace of Swords thinks first, the Ace of Pentacles lands first.

Interactions: the chemistry between cards

Feeding: air fans fire (thought gives action oxygen); earth holds water (reality catches feeling). Clashing: fire and water quench each other (impulse against emotion, read as inner drain); air and earth stall (ideas and reality refusing to yield). A run of one suit = a theme intense but narrow — the absent element is often the problem. A clash is not doom; it is "work needed to reconcile".

An imbalance checklist

Excess: too much fire burns through reason, too much water drowns in feeling, too much air thinks itself into paralysis, too much earth guards itself rigid. Deficiency: no fire, no drive; no water, numbness; no air, no clarity; no earth, nothing lands. A spread's element distribution is an energy check-up sheet.

Key points of this lesson

Scheduled into the Review Center after the quiz

Fire · Wands

Action, will, desire; fast and outward — lights up and charges.

Water · Cups

Feeling, relationship, intuition; slow and inward — the heart moves before the body.

Air · Swords

Thought, language, conflict; fast and sharp — thinks first, and overthinks easily.

Earth · Pentacles

Matter, body, money; slow and steady — walks slowly but lands every step.

The two feeding pairs

Air fans fire: thought gives action oxygen. Earth holds water: reality catches feeling.

The two clashing pairs

Fire and water quench (impulse vs emotion, inner drain); air and earth stall (ideas vs reality, spinning). A clash reads as reconciling work, not doom.

Runs and absences

One element piled up = an intense, narrow theme; the absent element is often exactly the problem.

Element in excess

Fire burns reason, water drowns feeling, air thinks into paralysis, earth guards itself rigid.

Element deficient

No fire, no drive; no water, numbness; no air, no clarity; no earth, nothing lands.
