Celtic Cross · 10 cards

Celtic Cross

The classic grand spread of more than a century: ten cards lay out a matter's present, foundation, past and future, self and surroundings. The information is vast and the reading has an order — get the "present → crossing → outcome" spine through first, then unfold the other seven. The layout follows Waite: the second card lies across the first, and the four on the right stand in a vertical staff, read from the bottom up.

  1. Present

The centre of energy you stand in right now; the origin of the whole spread.

  2. Crossing / obstacle

The force lying across the present. Clashing with it, a stumbling block; feeding it, a stepping stone — do not read it as obstacle by default.

  3. Foundation

The deep base of the matter, the settled ground working below awareness.

  4. Past

The influence on its way out: it shaped the present, but its force is fading.

  5. Goal / conscious mind

What you consciously want — which is not always what you actually need.

  6. Near future

The short-term trend about to enter; the wind for the next step.

  7. Self

Your stance and self-image inside this matter.

  8. Environment

How the people and circumstances around you see and shape the matter.

  9. Hopes and fears

What you most long for and most dread — often two faces of one card; the fear is usually the hope's shadow.

  10. Outcome

Where the converging forces lead; with 1 and 2 it forms the spine of the whole reading.

COMMON MISREADINGS

  • Equal weight on all ten cards — read the 1-2-10 spine first; the other seven unfold and qualify it.
  • Reading position 2 as "obstacle" by default — a crossing card that feeds the present is an aid.
  • Reading position 9 as only hope or only fear — it is one coin's two faces; the fear is usually the hope's shadow.
